Are you looking to help your clients receive more support?

The Community Doula Connection Program connects equity deserving families with perinatal doula support, food security and resources to fill the gaps in the current perinatal health care system; we call this wrap-around care. We receive referrals from established community partners such as; local midwives, doctors, social workers, and public health nurses.  By way of these referring community partners, the CDCP Doulas are connected with families to support prenatally, during birth and in the postpartum period.

Birthing Families Foundation has been actively and successfully providing access to barrier free doula care on Vancouver Island and on the Gulf Islands since 2021.

If you are a perinatal health care professional

serving the perinatal population and your client is within Birthing Families Foundation’s mandate and in need of perinatal doula support, please request doula support through the form below!

ABOUT DOULA

care

Having a doula to support care during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum has been proven to improve clinical health and emotional well-being outcomes, which is even more critical in areas with limited access to adequate care and for families that face barriers with intersectional challenges such as mental health, addictions, racial and gender-based biases and economic stressors. Doulas facilitate and encourage education in community, informed consent and strategies around safe and inclusive care that centers the birthing person and their autonomy.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Referrals come from established community partners such as; local midwives, doctors, social workers, and public health nurses. The referral is received and reviewed by the Doula Program Director and forwarded to the appropriate referral coordinator.

  • The Coordinator then reaches out to a list of skilled doulas in the area and assigns a doula to the client based on location, skill set and capacity. That doula will reach out directly to the birthing person to discuss their needs and how the doula can best support them in pregnancy, birth and postpartum as requested.

Our referred birthing clients are given full informed consent and consideration in the doula that is placed with them.

  • The doula is responsible for timely contact and communication while maintaining clear documentation and connection with the other members of the care team and our foundation

  • On completion of the care, Birthing Families Foundation creates a space for feedback from the families, the doulas and our partners in the perinatal care community so we can ensure high levels of accountability and support for families, providers and doulas and to address any further gaps in care that have been identified.
